Information About Band

Here is a message from Mr. Cooper, the band director:

Hi,

I know all of you have been wondering when 5th grade band will begin for this year, so I want to update you on what we are planning on doing.  5th grade band will begin on September 28th. More details on the schedule will be posted when that is finalized.   So if you haven't obtained an instrument yet, you still have some time!  

To obtain an instrument:

The first step, is to make sure to check the list of what instrument your child is playing which is posted on the 5th Grade band website.  This list was first posted in the Spring but has had a few people added over the summer.  If you were already on the list in the Spring nothing has changed.  If you believe there is a mistake or have any questions about the list, be sure to contact me and we will get it sorted out.

The second step is to get to Kincaid's, Hometown Music, or obtain an instrument and accessories sometime before the start date.  If you have already set up a rental or plan to rent an instrument with either place, I will be setting up a date and time for you to pick up those instruments once they are delivered to the school.  I will update you via e-mail on when that will be.

I plan to begin a Google calendar just for 5th grade band and will also provide important updates via the website.

Also on the 5th Grade Band Website are instructions to join the 5th Grade Band REMIND text service if you haven't done so already.  I will be able to keep you up to date via this service as well.

Movie Night

Graham Elementary is hosting a movie night on Friday, September 11 from 6-9.  Since there is no football game or Pony Wagon Day festivities that night, we thought a movie night for the kids and a kid-free date night for the parents would be a great idea. 

The cost is 5 dollars per child and we will provide a light snack.

Donation Board

If you are able & willing, here are a few items that could be donated to our classroom this year.
On the list I have several word games because once a month I would like to take a break from the regular word study routine to play word-building games.
Old Magazines can be donated all year long!  We will use them often.

Projects

Well, the tribe projects are coming to an end.  The powerpoints were a great success and the posters look awesome!! If you're coming to conferences Thursday night, be sure to check them out in the hallway. 
We are now switching gears to a timeline project.  The students are going to create a multi-tiered timeline.  They will choose 2 topics that are somehow related/connected.  From each of those 2 topics, they will choose 4-6 events.  After the timelines are completed, the students will write a reflection paragraph explaining how the topics/events/timelines are related, connected, or similar.

     Even though you might not think it's true, the sticky note and the computer have something in common.  Both of these items help people gain access to information quickly.  In 1974, Art Fry wanted something to stick in his book so he wouldn't lose his place, so he invented the sticky note in 1977.  IBM's first home computer came out in 1982 and Google launched in 1986, which allowed people to access endless amounts of information very quickly.  Without these two devices, the search for information would take a lot longer.
