New Schedule

The entire school has tweaked schedules in order to incorporate a "No New Instruction" time for Math Intervention Groups.
Our Lunch and Recess are still at the same times, but everything else is a different.  Our related arts (specials) are at a different time, but will stay on the same days. Ex: gym is still Mondays and Wednesdays.
The Math Intervention will take place during the last 1/2 hour of the day.  The students will be sorted based on their individual Math needs and divided among 6 teachers: myself, Mrs. Dill, Mrs. Shreve, Ms. Markley, Mrs. Prince, and Mrs. Burroughs.  The groups will be flexible and change about every week or two.
Our school-wide focus this year is to improve our Math scores on the OAA, so hopefully this intervention will help.  3rd grade however, is not incorporating this Math intervention because their focus is the 3rd grade guarantee which is a reading test.
This is starting tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21 and continuing through the end of the year.

This Week (Jan 13-17)

This week we are working on two reports.  One is the S.S. tribe research report and the other is the D.A.R.E. report.  The D.A.R.E. report final draft is due Thursday.  The tribe research report will be due on Friday.  We are working on these during L.A. The students are required to write a rough draft; have a peer read it over, look for mistakes, and sign the bottom; then write a final draft.  Most of the students have started the tribe rough draft, some are finished with the rough draft.  
The S.S. tribe project (either a poster, diorama, or powerpoint) is due Monday.  We will be presenting these Monday and Tuesday.  

Speaking of Tuesday, we have a 2-hr delay and our school wide (4th & 5th grade) spelling bee.  We have 4 students participating in this bee!
In L.A. we are working on good summary writing.  We use the 5 Ws strategy (who, what, where, when why/maybe how).  So practice this at home if you like.
In Math we are starting to learn about fractions.  We will be focusing on fractions for the entire 3rd nine weeks.
The 2nd nine weeks ends Friday the 17th!! So look for grade cards in about 2 weeks.  Also Friday will be Risner's Reading Party :)

5th grade spelling bee

Congrats to our 6 spellers!! Four of our classmates will continue in to the school wide spelling bee this Tuesday= Jakob, Brenton, Shamar, and Kelsey.
Special shout out to Jakob who ended up winning the fifth grade bee even though he didn't want to be in it to begin with!
