Happy New Year!!!

Wow, is this school year going fast!!!
I apologize for not updating in a while...Hope your holidays were full of joy, laughter, and relaxation!!
Here's what's new:

We are starting a Social Studies Project on a Native American tribe.  The tribes include North, Central, and South American Indians.  Navejo, Pueblo, Arctic Inuit, Great/Interior Plains, Adenas, Hopewells, Iroquois, Algonquian, Missippians, Aztecs, Mayas, Incas, Olmec, and Anasazis.
The students will research in class (probably all week Jan 5-9), write a short (2-4 paragraph) essay, and complete either a powerpoint or a poster.  ALL of the work must be done here at school in order for us to count it as a summative grade.  We are looking at next Friday, January 16 (end of the 2nd 9-weeks) as a due date.
The purpose and focus of the project is for the students to understand that "Where you live influences how you live"-each tribe used the resources around them to survive and live.

D.A.R.E. is soon coming to an end :(

Science will be focused on Earth and Space Science including learning about the Earth's rotation and revolution, characteristics of the planets, Earth's relationship with the moon, and characteristics of the sun.  We will also do a group project on a planet in class.

Math is going to get challenging with a focus on fractions.  We have skipped a few Topics due to the amount of fractions on the upcoming February/March PARCC Assessments (for more info check out the Curriculum Corner on the Graham website or this link: http://parcconline.org/).  We are starting Topic 11 which is multiplying and dividing fractions.  For home practice please visit the Envision website:

In Language Arts we are switching gears to a focus on Nonfiction texts. We are identifying and supporting main ideas right now. Keep reading at home and helping your child practice his/her spelling words. We have been concentrating on learning and understanding the spelling principle more than just memorizing words.
